My Current Obsession: Anti-Gravity Yoga

I’m new to the community and have yet to publish my fitness “aha” moment, which I feel is almost an ongoing moment in the sense that as I grow in my fitness journey, I continue to have new “aha” moments.  But I will write about that separately, for now I want to share my wonderful new obsession with aerial yoga (or Anti-gravity yoga).

I’ve been doing yoga for 10 years now!  When I say that I feel really old!  Okay, I’ll admit there was a period right after high school when I was out every night and lost touch with yoga, so let’s say that I’ve been doing it for 8 years.  Basically my love of yoga started when my fitness journey first began at 16.  This is where my initial “aha” moment comes in which I won’t go into very much detail about now, but in a nutshell — I went to a yoga class one Saturday morning at the gym close to our house (after my mom told me to “try to find a hobby I enjoy” and I loved it.  For the first time in my life I was good at something and I enjoyed it too!  Even at that young age I knew that class was a defining moment in my life.

Anyway, so here I am today, and fitness is still a huge part of my life.  This year I have been very blessed to have Anti-Gravity Yoga classes start at my local gym and from the first lesson I had that “defining moment” feeling – from the swooshing to the inversions I just feel so at home in the class.  Like i just knew what to do next, my body was telling me exactly where it wanted to be.

Something I really reflected on after my first few classes was the trust factor.  You need to have full trust in your hammock, in your instructor, and in yourself.  And during my first few classes I was so nervous and doubted both my ability and the safety of the hammock, but when the day came that I found my trust, it was the most beautiful realization.  I think this realization of trusting in my abilities has really filtered into my thoughts in everyday life too.

Who knows?  Maybe a simple yoga class has the power to teach us to self-doubt less.  And, if it doesn’t do that, it will help improve back pain, improve core strength, flexibility, and relieve stress!
